Each year, Pinedale takes an amazing step forward as a congregation by sharing in an awesome time of Bible study we’ve come to call “Building Our Legacy”. These annual 40 Day journeys help unify us as a Church body. But more importantly, it helps to bring each participant closer to answering Jesus’ call to Discipleship.
“… No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the Kingdom of God.” These words from Jesus in Luke 9:26 send a clear message to all Believers: Move forward; continue to grow; and most importantly, do not look back and long for the sinful lifestyle you gave up when you chose to follow Christ.
Those of you who have not participated in “Building Our Legacy” may be wondering why we chose “40 days”. It’s simple: in the Bible, 40 days was a significant symbolic number. God often used 40 day periods to orchestrate life changing events.
Over the next 40 days, we hope you will use the daily devotions as a tool to allow God to complete a transforming work in your heart. Only God knows what He has in store for you, but you will be blessed in your walk with Him. Make a promise to yourself to spend time each day completing the devotion, reading Scripture, spending time in prayer and journaling.
One of the great things about God’s Grace is that God accepts us as we are, but He never allows us to stay there. When you invite the Holy Spirit into your heart, you are inviting God to change you, and He will! God’s Grace is transformational, and He never ceases molding and shaping His children into the image of Jesus Christ. Amazingly, God also USES His children to transform the world around them by shining His light and sharing His love.
Light and Love. Those two words go hand in hand, and they pretty much summarize God’s charge for His people. We accept God’s love for us (through Jesus Christ), and we share that love with others in His name. That simple act changes everything. Light and love transform everything they touch. When they enter, they always leave things better than they found them. This study will examine what that looks like.
Think of this six week study as a journey. In Acts 1:8 Jesus instructs His Disciples to begin in Jerusalem, where they are at the time. Then move in concentric circles out to Judea, Samaria, and the rest of the world. In other words, “Start where you are, but never stay still.” That same theory ungirds this study. After setting the stage in week 1, we will use the second week to examine how God wants to leave YOU better. The first mission field is inside of you! Then we will advance through the different arenas of our lives: home, work, Church, command unity, and beyond. In each arena, God calls us to shine light in the darkness
Another very important part of Leave It Better is the Home Accountability Group. Group meetings occur once per week during the 40 day period and include teaching, prayer, a time of accountability, fellowship and food. Accountability Group meetings begin Sunday evening, February 12th and will meet for 5 weeks.
How Do I Get Involved?
During both Worship hours on Sunday, February 5th, every person in attendance will receive a "Leave It Better" devotion book. (Be sure to get your copy – daily devotions begin on Monday, February 6th.) In addition, every household represented will receive a brochure designed to help you choose a Home Accountability Group. (You may preview the brochure here.) Take a moment to review the information and then proceed to the sign of the home you would like to attend. The hosts will greet you, take care of registration and answer any questions you may have. If you are unable to attend on sign-up Sunday, you may pick up a devotion book from the Church Office. You may also contact the office after Sunday, February 5th to be placed in a Home Accountability Group.
The Student Ministry will have their own 40 Day Devotion book, “Youthwalk”. Weekly Accountability Group meetings for the students will take place at Pinedale on Sunday evenings beginning February 12th from 6:00-8:00 pm. The meetings will consist of a time of fellowship, food, prayer and lessons that are tailored to teens. All Middle and High School Students are asked to meet in the balcony area of the Worship Center as soon as sign-ups begin on February 5th. This is when they will receive their devotion books as well as specific instructions for devotion time and weekly meetings.
The Children’s Ministry will be launching the 2017 version of XL and XL Mini on February 5th as well.
